In some ways, Martha preferred the night shift. Everyone wanted the morning shifts, wanted to be in and out at a reasonable hour, but Martha liked the midnight to noon shifts, liked seeing the world that most people missed. Everyone slept the night away and missed helping people when they were at their most vulnerable. When she became a proper doctor, she was going to request the later shifts always, because someone should. Someone should care.

Of course, the morning afterward was always tiring.

And despite what the medical books said on the matter, coffee really did keep her going from about 10 am to 12am. And as long as she properly hydrated herself, that could offset the effects of the caffeine.

She grabbed another cup from the stand near the entrance and started to head back towards her rounds when something caught her eye. Were those press vans outside? It had been a long while since Royal Hope had a celebrity in their beds. Oh, she'd probably hear all about it from Tish later. How she just missed the big things like celebrities in favor of the little things like patients.

Harold Saxon was not precisely a celebrity, but he might as well have been. The way the press followed after him was more than just Westminster correspondents and tabloids looking for scandals. Harold Saxon had been hard at work building a cult of personality these past months, and it was certainly paying off.

Of course, the low-level hypnosis courtesy of the Archangel Network didn't hurt.

So, like any good politician building himself an image, Mr Saxon was off doing acts of great publicity - kissing babies, saving small children from dying in car accidents, blah blah blah. He had, however, been a bit remiss as far as health care went, and health care was a quick way to turn people. When his PR-people had suggested a hospital visit, Harold Saxon had been quick to oblige.

And the Master knew exactly which hospital he wanted to visit.

The guided tour with Stoker was done with, thankfully. The only thing more dull than a tour was a tour from someone vaguely important who wanted to impress. That was why the Master had given Stoker that Saxon Smile(™) then requested permission to explore the hospital on his own. Stoker could hardly deny Harold Saxon, so off the Master went. Somehow, his pass had turned from a visitor's to one with full clearance.

There. Martha Jones. Hard at work, and wasn't that sweet? Trying so hard to be a proper doctor.

"Oh, excuse me... Doctor? I was wondering if I could have a word."

The voice behind her startled her some, mostly because of how completely familiar it was. From all those advertisements and political debates on television, it was impossible to mistake it.

"Mr. Saxon!" That was a surprise. Probably the reason for the vans outside. Was his wife ill? Or him? No, no, he wasn't in a hospital gown and his badge read 'visitor'.

Oh, right, and he was talking to her.

"Sorry, hello. Um, Martha Jones, sorry. Again." She extended a hand to him. "Is there something you need?"

The Master shook Martha's hand, slipping easily into a pleasant smile. "It's a pleasure."

The Master put his hands in his pockets. Casual, they said Saxon was, with the ability to connect to more of his public. "I was wondering if you had a few moments? I understand that the schedule here is very busy. One thing I hope to help with, if at all possible."

He glanced back down the hall. They were alone enough. The Master turned to Martha and said, "I had a guided tour courtesy of the head doctor, but in my experience that sort of thing doesn't tell you much about the way places work."

He was so calm and relaxed. No bodyguards, no press. It was strangely off-putting. She felt a little like she was being quizzed. What would Mr. Stoker want her to say? What would be the right answer?

Mr. Saxon, though, he wasn't acting like he was quizzing her. He seemed almost nice, actually.

"I'm not really the sort of person to ask," she admitted. "I'm just an intern, working the rounds."

"Medical students will one day be doctors," the Master said, holding back a smile at the joke. "If the students not taught properly, how can we blame anyone but the institution for allowing things to go wrong?"

As if immediately realising his error, the Master reached out and tapped Martha's upper-arm apologetically, with the comfortable air of a Time Lord who knew little of 'personal space' beyond the academic explaination. "Not that I meant to say anything against you. But if you see problems with your training... well, even, what is working the rounds like?"

Martha was used to the just-edging-on-the-side-of-caution spaces that doctors and other doctors had with each other that Mr. Saxon seemed to not know. She wouldn't say that it made her uncomfortable, it just made her feel off. Like she should be more comfortable than she was.

"Well, the training schedule varies between 12, 24, and 78 hour shifts depending on what department you're working in. I'm handling in-patient care at the moment, so I'm finishing up a 12 hour shift at noon. Basically you do what the doctor you're following did when he was an intern: follow him around and work at his beck and call."

As she spoke, she took a step back from Mr. Saxon and over to the patient charts. She sighed; she had just reorganized them earlier that morning.

The Master frowned, glancing over at the charts. "That last is a very long shift. Is if efficient to have the shifts go on so long?"

He took a few polite steps back, permitting Martha her space. She seemed professional, responsible and so on. Not so bothered by his status, probably concerned for her patients' well-being, as any proper would-be doctor ought to be. And, of course, young and pretty. Probably good at running and screaming.

All around, that she ended up as a companion wasn't a great surprise.

[ooc; sorry! Wasn't looking]
